Findhorn Ecovillage

Findhorn ecovillage showcases sustainable development in environmental, social, and economic terms. It is an architectural community project based at The Park, in Moray, Scotland. It is a constantly evolving model used as a learning environment by several university and school groups as well as by professional organizations and municipalities worldwide.

They aim to build ecological houses, innovative use of building materials such as local stone and straw bales, applied technology in the Living Machine sewage treatment facility, electricity-generated with wind turbines. Findhorn Ecovillage re-designated an UN-Habitat

“WE STRIVE TO DEMONSTRATE LOW-CARBON, PLACE-BASED VALUES & PRACTICES FOR HUMAN SETTLEMENTS TO THRIVE” is their motto.

For over 50 years Findhorn experimental community for those engaged in redesigning the human presence in the world.

The development of zero-carbon buildings and the retrofitting of existing structures probably offer the most cost-effective and most immediate systems in response to climate change.

Throughout the long term, they have developed an ecologically stable, energy-efficient development system utilizing natural materials. They have incorporated 'breathing wall' development that takes out the requirement for a vapor barrier and permits the fabric of the structure to interact with the indoor atmosphere beneficially.

They have developed the guidelines for ecological housing design and development and also published Simply Build Green, the UK's first ecological building manual.

125 new ecological buildings have been erected to date, built to follow the strict ecological guidelines, with passive solar design, high insulation, and environmentally benign materials. In 2008 a visual arts center, Moray Art Center was opened to serve the region with museum-quality exhibition space and a few studios. They have ongoing plans for the construction of an ecologically best-built environment.

They have also explored different techniques with straw bale construction, the 'Earthship' using recycled car tires, and remain open to adding new and innovative ecological solutions for the built environment.

The publication of Simply Build Green, the UK’s first guide to ecological housing, because of their research and experience, has helped the ecovillage become a significant resource for ecological training locally, nationally, and internationally.

Various homes and community buildings incorporate solar panels for hot water heating.

A community company supplies panels to residential and commercial clients all through the UK, both for new structures and to retrofit existing buildings.

Most new community buildings incorporate design features that invite passive solar radiation to reduce building heating needs, for example, south-facing windows or conservatories and negligible wall openings on north walls.

The ecovillage is an experiment for a research project on the possibility of using load management technology, which is the equipment that helps to coordinate the electricity output of the wind turbines with the electricity requirements of community homes and businesses. Energy running expenses for recent houses are commonly not the running expenses for the original old caravans.

Using solar, wind, and wood, combined with highly energy-efficient features in our new buildings, the Findhorn ecovillage now gets 28% of its total non-transportation energy from renewable sources.

An ecologically designed sewage treatment plant is intended to treat sewage from the population of up to 500 people living at the Findhorn Ecovillage and, is providing research and educational facilities to ecological water treatment technology throughout the world.

Ecological water treatment systems such as the Living Machine ® and Biomatrix ® Remediation, treat wastewater based on a ‘whole systems’ approach to biological technology.

Biomatrix Water is based at Findhorn, and the founding partners of the Biomatrix Water team have over two decades of experience designing and delivering ecological engineering projects for the treatment and recycling of municipal and industrial wastewater and bioremediation.
